People often wrongly assume that applying one or two more coats will make the stain more durable. I suspect the deck was either painted or that it received multiple coats of stain. They just weather away.

First many house painting contractors promote the use of a two coat paint job as offering greater value than a one coat job. Most stains absorb into the wood surface so they don t form a film that could peel off. Many factors can contribute to this problem. Also don t apply stain after it rains.

The moisture trapped inside the wood may hamper stain absorption into its fibers eventually causing it to peel off. Solid color stain is not supposed to peel like paint does when applied to cedar siding. The ideal temperature for staining decks is between 50 f to 90 f.

That will both extend the life of the siding and make the color more what you want. The unfortunate reality is that peeling solid color stain is a common occurrence.
