The panels block the heat from being absorbed by your roof and eventually your home and actually prevent extra heat from being generated. After all sunlight and heat go hand in hand. The truth is that excessive heat can actually make solar panels less efficient. Well no not exactly.

The light from the sun heats up the panels which can be used for household hot water or to generate steam and electricity. Instead solar panels absorb heat that otherwise would have been passed onto your roof. Although solar panels absorb heat much like a roof would the fact that they are raised up off the roof significantly changes the amount of infrared radiation heat that makes it into the house. The researchers also discovered that solar panels prevent heat from escaping during the night when it is cooler.

Basically there are two types of solar technologies you can use to heat your home. Some solar panels do use the sun s heat to generate electricity and these are known as thermal panels.
